Collecting tips in your online store
You can add a tipping option (also known as gratuity) to your store checkout so customers can support your business or express their gratitude for your service. On the payment page, customers will be able to choose from the tip amounts or percentages that you set in your store admin.
You can also set a custom title and description for the tips section that will suit your goals. For example, you can call this section “tips” if you run a restaurant, or call it “donations” if you are a non-profit organization.
Setting up tipping options in your online store
You can choose the type of tipping options: absolute amounts or percentage of the order total and set up available values that customers can choose from at checkout.
To set up tipping options in your online store:
- From your store admin, go to Settings → General → Cart & Checkout.
- Scroll down to the bottom to the Tips and gratuity section.
- Click the toggle next to the Tipping option at checkout to enable tips.
- To set up the tips section, click Tip settings.
- (Optional) Edit the title and the description section.
- In the Tip amounts section, select the tip calculation: fixed amounts or percentage of order total.
- Add tip amounts that customers will be able to choose from at checkout. To let customers check out with no tips, add a zero tipping option.
- Save the changes.
That’s it! Now when the tipping option is enabled, customers can add tips to orders.
If you have set up taxes in your store, taxes are not applied to tips. For example, if a customer wants to pay 10$ tips, they will pay 10$ — taxes are not calculated on tips.
Changing wording for tipping options
You can easily change the tipping texts that appear at checkout: the title and the description. You can specify your goal: collecting tips, collecting donations for a charity, or something else.
To change the wording for tipping options:
- From your store admin, go to Settings → General → Cart & Checkout.
- Scroll down to the bottom to the Tips and gratuity section.
- Click Tip settings.
- In the Tip wording section, edit the title and the description.
- Save the changes.
Customers will see the text that you specified at checkout, when selecting tips.
